Tilt Table Study

A tilt table study is used to determine the cause of fainting spells or syncopal episodes.

Preparation
Do not eat or drink anything after midnight before the test unless you are otherwise instructed. An intravenous needle will be placed in your arm before the procedure begins.

The Procedure
The procedure requires between 15 minutes and an hour. Your chest will be shaved in small areas, if necessary, and cleaned with a liquid abrasive and alcohol. Electrodes will be placed on your chest to monitor your heart rhythm. You will be asked to lie on a table. The table will be tilted up to 90 degrees from the starting point. Your blood pressure will be monitored throughout the procedure and you may receive intravenous fluids. You may feel lightheaded and experience a syncopal episode. If you have questions, please ask your physician or the cardiovascular technician who will be with you throughout the procedure. Your physician will discuss the results with you. Your primary care physician will be notified of the results.

Following the Procedure
The IV will be removed. You may resume your normal activities and diet unless otherwise notified.
